Media Brief: 80-meter-long steel bridge launched over Railway Road Over Bridge in Ahmedabad for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has achieved another significant engineering milestone with the successful launching of an 80-metre-long 'Make in India'steel bridge over the Anupam Flyover (Railway Over Bridge) in Ahmedabad.

The Anupam Flyover, constructed over the Ahmedabad–Mumbai main line of Western Railway (Sabarmati–Vatva section), is an important road link connecting Khokhra Apparel Park Metro Station and Kankaria Lake. The Bullet Train viaduct runs parallel to this railway line.

In Ahmedabad district, the Bullet Train viaduct is primarily being constructed using the Span-by-Span (SBS) construction method, with typical span lengths ranging from 30 to 50 metres. However, at the Anupam Flyover crossing, the piers had to be positioned on either side of the existing flyover, necessitating a longer span length of 80 metres.

The steel bridge, weighing 1,004 metric tonnes, with a height of 14 metres and a width of 14.4 metres, was fabricated at Zetwerk's manufacturing facility in Wardha (Nagpur), Maharashtra, and transported to the construction site. A specially designed temporary launching arrangement measuring 10.8 metres × 140 metres and weighing approximately 1,110 metric tonnes was constructed to facilitate the assembly and launching of the bridge.

The bridge was assembled on temporary trestles approximately 18 metres above ground level using 18 skid arrangements and 35,602 Tor-Shear Type High Strength (TTHS) bolts, ensuring high structural integrity. The structure has been provided with a C5 protective painting system and elastomeric bearings to enhance its long-term durability and vibration control.

After the assembly was completed, the entire bridge was launched longitudinally over the temporary launching structure using hydraulic jacks. The operation was carried out during a planned traffic block obtained from the local authorities to ensure public safety while maintaining strict compliance with all construction and safety standards. Following the longitudinal launch, the bridge was carefully side-slewed to achieve its precise final alignment with the Bullet Train viaduct.

With this achievement, 15 out of the 17 planned steel bridges in Gujarat have been completed. Overall, 28 steel bridges are planned for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.
