NHSRCL Signs Agreement for Track related works for Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project in Maharashtra
Published Date: 11-09-2025

National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited signed an agreement today with M/s Larsen & Toubro Limited for the design, supply, and construction of track and track-related works, including testing and commissioning for the double-line High-Speed Railway in the state of Maharashtra.

Covering a total alignment of about 157 route km, the scope includes the complete stretch between the Mumbai Bullet Train station and Zaroli village at the Maharashtra–Gujarat border. The work also includes track construction for four stations and a rolling stock depot at Thane.

Track construction work in Gujarat (under packages T-2 and T-3) is progressing rapidly on more than 200 km of viaduct. All three track construction packages have been awarded to Indian companies, thereby enhancing India’s expertise and know-how in high-speed rail track construction technology.

The ballast-less slab track system, as used in Japanese High-Speed Rail (Shinkansen), is being adopted for India’s first HSR project (MAHSR). This track system consists of four main components: RC Track Bed, Cement Asphalt Mortar (CAM), Pre-cast Track Slab, and Rails with Fasteners.

Under an MoU with NHSRCL, the Japan Railway Technical Service (JARTS) has conducted comprehensive training and certification programs for Indian engineers, work leaders, supervisors, and technicians. These programs cover 15 specialized modules focusing on key areas such as track slab manufacturing, RC track bed construction, slab track installation, and CAM installation.

Under the T-2 and T-3 packages in Gujarat, around 436 engineers have already been trained in these advanced techniques. A similar initiative is planned under this package to train engineers and supervisors in Maharashtra before the commencement of track works.

Project Progress as on 8th September 2025:

• Viaduct construction: 320 km

• Pier works: 397 km

• Pier foundation: 408 km

• 17 river bridges, 09 steel bridges, and 05 PSC (pre-stressed concrete) bridges completed

• 4 lakh noise barriers installed along 203 km stretch

• 202 track km of track bed construction completed

• 1800 OHE masts installed covering approximately 44 km of mainline viaduct

• Work on 21 km tunnel between BKC and Shilphata in Maharashtra in progress

• Excavation work on 07 mountain tunnels in Palghar district in progress

• Superstructure work on all stations in Gujarat is at an advanced stage

• Work started on all three elevated stations and base slab casting at Mumbai underground station in Maharashtra is in progress
