Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited the under-construction Bullet Train Station at Surat in Gujarat and reviewed the progress of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. During the visit, he interacted with the team working on India’s first Bullet Train project and enquired about various aspects including progress, timelines, and execution challenges. The workers assured him that the project is progressing smoothly and on schedule.
An engineer from Kerala shared her experience of working at the Noise Barrier Factory in Navsari, Gujarat, where robotic systems are being used for welding rebar cages. She expressed pride in contributing to the nation’s first Bullet Train project, describing it as a “dream project” and a moment of pride for her family.
Reflecting on the spirit of national service, the Prime Minister emphasised that when individuals feel they are contributing to the nation and creating something new, it becomes a powerful source of motivation. He drew a parallel with India’s space journey, recalling the pride associated with launching the country’s first satellite and how today India launches hundreds of satellites.
Another team member, Shruti from Bengaluru, serving as Lead Engineering Manager, explained the rigorous engineering and design control processes involved. She highlighted how teams continuously evaluate multiple solutions and alternatives at every stage to ensure precision and quality execution.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of documenting experiences and learnings from the project. He suggested compiling these insights into a structured format like a “Blue Book” to guide future large-scale infrastructure projects. He emphasised that proper documentation would help avoid repeated experimentation and enable efficient replication of successful practices.
He further noted that replication must be backed by a clear understanding of decision-making processes, otherwise it may lack direction and purpose. He stressed that such documentation would benefit future engineers, students, and policymakers, contributing to long-term nation-building.
During the interaction, an employee expressed his dedication through a poem, which the Prime Minister appreciated, acknowledging the commitment and passion of the workforce.
Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw was also present during the visit.
Background
The Prime Minister visited the under-construction Bullet Train Station in Surat to review the progress of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at transforming high-speed connectivity.
The MAHSR corridor spans approximately 508 kilometres, covering 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra. It connects major cities including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai.
Built using advanced engineering techniques aligned with global standards, nearly 465 km (around 85% of the corridor) is being constructed on viaducts, ensuring minimal land disruption and enhanced operational safety. So far, 326 km of viaduct construction has been completed, along with 17 out of 25 planned river bridges.
Once completed, the Bullet Train will significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to approximately two hours, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable travel. The project is expected to boost economic activity, business growth, and tourism along the corridor.
The Surat–Bilimora section, spanning around 47 km, is at an advanced stage of completion, with civil works and track-bed installation already finished. The Surat station design is inspired by the city’s globally renowned diamond industry, combining aesthetic appeal with modern functionality.
The station will feature world-class passenger amenities such as spacious waiting areas, modern restrooms, and retail outlets. It will also provide seamless multi-modal connectivity with Surat Metro, city bus services, and the Indian Railways network.
