NHSRCL forms HSR Innovation Centre Trust for developing environmentally sustainable, time & cost effective solutions using indigenous technical capabilities
Published Date: 29-05-2019

National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has formed a High Speed Rail Innovation Centre Trust to undertake targeted, applied collaborative research to solve issues raised by the rail industry and enhance railway safety, reliability, productivity, efficiency and sustainability, ensuring customer satisfaction.

The trust will leverage Indian technical capabilities and develop indigenous expertise in High Speed Railways to provide innovative, cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions. It will also offer technological guidance, strategic analysis and advisory support to the Indian rail transportation industry and contribute to the development of HSR-specific standards in India.

The HSR Innovation Centre is managed by a Board of Trustees chaired by the Managing Director, NHSRCL, supported by an Executive Council and assisted by an Advisory Council. The Advisory Council includes eminent members from industry, academia and research institutions from India and abroad such as IITs, University of Tokyo, DRDO, ISRO and JR East. The trust adopts a collaborative approach for funding and execution of research projects.

Key Research Areas:

  • Application Software for HSR: Development of indigenous software systems for railway transport and maintenance management to reduce dependency on imported systems and improve cost efficiency.
  • Simulation Models for Power Supply: Development of indigenous simulation tools for validation of traction power supply and OHE design, reducing dependency on foreign organizations and saving time and cost.
  • Economical Civil Engineering Solutions: Development of reinforced earth retaining walls and abutments to reduce land requirement, improve earthquake resistance and provide cost-effective alternatives to viaducts, based on Japanese Shinkansen experience adapted to Indian conditions.
  • Rolling Stock Maintenance Simulator: Development of indigenous simulators for training and troubleshooting of critical systems such as doors, brakes, passenger information systems and integration with signalling systems.

The first meeting of the trust was held at IIT Mumbai, where eminent experts from IITs, University of Tokyo and Railway Technical Research Institute (Japan), along with NHSRCL officials and industry experts, deliberated on innovation strategies for High Speed Rail development in India.
