Media Brief: Bullet Train Construction Update in Maharashtra
Published Date: 05-07-2025
  • Work on all three elevated stations — Thane, Virar, and Boisar — is progressing rapidly. The first slab for Virar and Boisar stations has been cast recently.
  • Pier foundations and pier construction are advancing at multiple locations along the alignment. Approximately 44 km of piers have been cast so far.
  • Viaduct construction using full span box girder launching has recently commenced from the Dahanu area in Palghar district.
  • Excavation work for 7 mountain tunnels is currently in progress in Palghar district.
  • Construction has begun on major river bridges including Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani.
  • A 21 km long underground/undersea tunnel — India’s first of its kind — is under construction between the Mumbai Bullet Train underground station at Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata. Out of the total length, 16 km is being constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), while the remaining 5 km is through the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). This includes a 7 km undersea tunnel at Thane Creek.
  • Approximately 4.1 km of tunnel heading has been completed cumulatively from Shilphata and from two concurrent faces at the ADIT portal using NATM.
  • Base slab casting has been completed at both Vikhroli shaft (at a depth of 56 meters) and Sawli shaft (at a depth of 39 meters).
  • Sludge treatment plants are being installed at shaft locations, and the Mahape tunnel lining casting yard is actively producing tunnel lining segments.
  • At the under-construction Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra-Kurla Complex, around 80% of excavation work has been completed. Base slab casting at a depth of 100 feet below ground level has already commenced at both ends of the station site.
